I have a background in clothing manufacturing and trade. I set up my design studio in 1987, having identified a niche in the market for high-end leatherwork products. Between 1987 and 2004, the studio developed into a successful design and manufacturing enterprise, stocking over 30 shops in Ireland, UK and Sweden. The production was carried out in-house with a dedicated team of craft people, trained by myself. Between 1988 and 1994, I produced the leatherwear collections for John Rocha, Michael Mortell, Quinn & Donnelly and Mark O’Neill, alongside the development of my own label. From 1994 onwards, I dedicated my time to the Róisín Gartland label.
I was lucky to be one of the first recipients of the mentor program when it was established by IDA Ireland in 1988 and understand the benefits of this program from first-hand involvement. In turn, I have used this experience to guide a couple of people on the road to a professional career. In 2012 I set up an annual award in conjunction with the RDS Craft Competition, offering a successful entrant one-to-one training/mentorship for dedicated period of time. As a professional craftsperson and businesswoman, I am dedicated to extending and sharing my knowledge and expertise.
