Mentor Niamh O’Rourke

Area of Expertise: Fashion styling, fashion show production and fashion journalism

Personal Summary:

I am a freelance fashion stylist and editor working within the fashion industry since 2000. My job as a stylist for fashion shoots involves art direction, sourcing wardrobe, props, locations, photographers and liaising with model agencies both in Ireland and abroad. I also produce and style fashion shows; managing every aspect of the event from styling the clothes to booking models, music, lighting, location and backstage management. As a freelance fashion editor for the Irish Independent for over 10 years, I write features and report on catwalk trends and the ever-changing fashion industry. This role has given me invaluable insight into fashion PR and marketing. Outside of the fashion world I source wardrobe for advertising stills and TV commercials, which involves locating everyday pieces as well as liaising with costume specialists and seamstresses to create customized pieces. My client list includes Arnotts, Brown Thomas, BT2, Harvey Nichols, Marks & Spencer, Penneys, AIB, Coors, Diet Coke, Eircom, Hennessy, Meteor and Toyota as well as Image magazine, Irish Tatler, the Irish Examiner and the Irish Independent.

Mentoring Experience:

Mentoring is a new area for me and one that I am very excited about. I have lectured in NCAD on the stylist's role within the fashion industry and I regularly take students on for work experience. My involvement with the Crafts Council and Showcase since 2005 (styling shoots, product selection and product display) has highlighted to me the depth of talent and skill in Ireland. As design and production are the key foundations within the fashion industry, I am delighted to able to support and help maximise the potential of Irish craft.

Qualifications:

Degree in Textile Design from NCAD
